Precast
Cell Structure: Strong & Durable - can aid in preventing a
suicide!
Attention must be given
to the structural nature of the prison cell, the predominant environment
for the inmate. A
suicide prevention cell should (1) not have joints at the ceiling and
between the walls for the purpose of anchoring a hook through the wall
and committing hanging.
(2) Seamless floors should be used instead of tile that has sharp corners.(3)
Floor surface should be nonslip surface that can't be removed.
The use of Precast Concrete
Prison Cells can aid in the prevention of suicides. A precast concrete
cell can withstand extreme physical abuse, clever entry, concealment
attempts, and repeated tampering.
A precast concrete cell has smooth
solid surfaces and no joints that have ligature points, a place to hang
something from. They are 5-sided monolithically poured cells, no wall
to wall joints or ceiling to wall joints. This lowers the risk of hiding
contraband, knives or any type of object that can be used to injure
themselves or others.
Precast concrete also lowers
the risk of cell wall failure over the operational life of the facility.
Corrosive materials or bodily fluids can deteriorate other cell wall
systems over time, allowing for corroded areas to be used to hide contraband
or be used as a ligature point. Due to its relatively impermeable, non
corrosive nature, concrete lowers the risk of cell wall failure in today's
prison environment.
