Suicide Prevention Furniture:

Furniture should be of a durable heavy-duty design that can’t be broken or dismantled and used as a weapon or tool. Anti suicide furniture should be designed so that there are no anchor points to be used for hanging.

Bunks should have rounded edges so that nothing can be tied to it , should not have any exposed space under it or have any slats, springs, ropes, or coils. Also bunk brackets mounted flush with the back of the bunk pans eliminates this area as a possible hanging surface. Single piece flush wall mounted desk and chair units eliminate cracks and crevices that can be used to conceal contraband and other harmful substances or be used as an anchor point.

Any shelf in the cell should have a solid, triangular end-plate, which prevent a noose from being applied.

Furniture products are designed, where possible, to eliminate holes that can be used to hang or drape material used in a suicide. The long standing industry standard of ventilation holes in bunks that also facilitates cleaning have been designed out to eliminate this risk.
