Central Falls Detention
Facility Corporation to Use Precast Cells for new Expansion in Rhode
Island.
August 2005--Central Falls,
RI- Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation awarded the design/bid
construction contracts for the expansion of the Donald W. Wyatt Detention
Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Wyatt, one of two facilities
in the Northeast, is designed, licensed and accredited to accommodate
large numbers of federal inmates.
The prison's long awaited
expansion will more than double the existing buildings footprint.
The corporation plans to add 336 beds to the 310-bed, 85,531 square
foot facility, at a cost of approx $35 million. The expansion when
complete will feature four (4) multi-story housing units and have
a medium and maximum security level.
Oldcastle Precast Modular
Group was awarded the contract to design, engineer and manufacture
the 236 fully outfitted precast correctional cells that will form
the housing units. The housing units feature total precast construction
except for the cast-in-place first floors. Each cell consists of four
walls and a roof. The cells will ship with all necessary furniture
and electrical fixtures , connections, embeds, conduits and will include
windows and a finished exterior. Their sister facility, Oldcastle
Precast of Rehoboth,MA will be producing the precast components.
The use of modular construction
was solicited seeing as modular precast construction has been proven
to permit for a shorter construction timetable and is economical.
O. Ahlborg & Sons,
Inc.-Cranston, RI is the General Contractor for this project and Edward
Rowse Architects, RI is the Architect of Record.
Final completion is slated
for June 2007.
