helps R.W. Granger Win Build Massachusetts Award
October 24, 2001 - R.W.Granger last night received a "Build
Massachusetts" Performance Award from Associated General Contractors
of Massachusetts for construction of the Josiah Quincy Upper School
in Boston. Congratulations to Max, Mike Dupuis and Herb Volpe for
their work on this project.
Sharing the award with us is Equus Design Group and the Boston Public
Schools. The Build Massachusetts program is designed to recognize
the
owner, architect and builder of a project.
In presenting the award, the Selection Jury made the following statement:
Faced with an overcrowded elementary school in the heart of Chinatown,
Boston Public Schools sent out a proposal, due back in 8 days, for
a
six-classroom facility with ancillary space. The school needed to
be up and
running within 105 days. The project team proposed a design/build
process
utilizing a modular precast system developed by Oldcastle Precast.
Normally, when confronted with this type of problem, temporary trailers
are
used. The city viewed this team's concept as a more permanent approach
to
the problem of school needs.
Despite the intense schedule pressures that were faced, and the tight
urban
site, the team went well beyond the call of duty in pulling off this
project
on schedule.
Employed here for the first time, this concept is now viewed as a
model
nationwide for modular school construction.
