Construction
underway @ CCA's Red Rock Correctional Center, AZ
Construction of
the precast modules for the Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy,
Arizona is underway at the Oldcastle Precast plant located in Chandler,
Arizona where the 876 fully-outfitted precast concrete prison cells
and 30 shower modules are being manufactured. These modules will be
used to construct the five new campus style inmate housing units which
have been design by the DLR Group located in Omaha, Nebraska and are
being constructed by Moss & Associates headquartered in Ocala,
Florida.
Precast concrete
prison cell construction were selected because it has three key advantages
over standard construction, speed, cost and security. Due to its strong,
durable nature precast concrete offers a highly secure structure.
Precast structures are inherently resistant to fire, wind and seismic
loads, assault, bullets, vandalism and prisoner escape. When you combine
precast's monolithic design reinforced with welded wire security mesh,
it becomes virtually impossible to penetrate. Monolithic precast modules
create cells with a reduced number of joints, a high degree of uniformity
between units, and smooth walls that prevent inmates from chinking
holes in which to hide contraband such as drugs and homemade knives
all adding to a facility that has a high degree of security.
Casting the correctional
cells in Chandler, Arizona and shipping them less than 60 miles to
the Eloy , AZ site for erection will save time and money when compared
with competing systems. While the precast cells are being manufactured
the foundation and site work are being completed. As soon as the cast
in place slab is completed the precast cells will reach the site ready
for installation. The first two housing units are scheduled for June
2005.
When the housing
units are in place, the dayroom floor can be poured and the roof system
can be installed. At that point, the mechanical and electrical trades
and any other finish work can be completed in an enclosed environment.
When all trades
are complete the Corrections Corporation of America will have a brand
new high performance, durable and secure detention facility.
